Borrowing an idea from Julie Bogart of Brave Writer, I’ve decided to start writing a narrative of our homeschool day once a month; I think this will be useful to me, to see where I may need to make changes going forward. I thought too that it might be fun to share with family and friends so they can see “what we do all day.”
The night before, I set out the girls’ new paints and some paper, so after breakfast they got right into painting. Z made a beautiful copy of Waterlilies; J and W made “Jackson Pollocks”, W’s very favorite painter.
While the girls painted and ate, I went through our morning time–bible reading, hymn singing (“All Creatures of Our God and King”–Z especially liked it, D talked loudly throughout it), A Child’s History of the World (holds the big girls attention somewhat, but sometimes I condense the stories if they are getting restless), a catechism video thanks to their lovely Sunday School teacher, and our memory poems. We all chose short ones, for easy success.
The one B and I are memorizing:
“There once was a girl with a very pretty curl
right in the center of her forehead
when she was good, she was very, very good,
and when she was bad, she was horrid”
I won’t tell you which child that is about.
After morning time, the girls changed into Easter dresses so they could dance “jigs” in the basement; I used the opportunity to do a few chores and work on my online classes. Then there was a fight over toys–we’ve had an issue with some children leaving an elaborate game to play with “later”, then getting angry when a younger sibling picks up the game…so some fighting, then another child knocked water over on some books. I was starting to feel a little exasperated, so I thought it might be a good opportunity to let the little girls play with the toys and have the big girls separate from the little ones for a little bit for tempers to cool (we have been quarantined a month, so tempers are understandable!).
The girls didn’t want to do much of their school today; we are in the last 6 weeks, and they are getting tired. So Z wrote a letter to a friend for her handwriting, J did a review math problem (She’s done with her curriculum for the year) and copied some spelling words, then she went off to play playdoh, and the girls who were fighting over Shopkins were able to be calm enough to share. Now its 9:30 AM.
Z read a Roald Dahl book, J played a “Go Blend” (like Go Fish but for reading) game with me, then we sang our days of the week / months of the year song and did a nursery rhyme for D, while eating Easter candy.
I read D a few picture books, then helped J and Z finish their English, Math, and Spelling words. The girls are all wearing Elsa dress-ups, so we decided to watch Frozen while I heated up left-overs for lunch. I give them about an hour to watch some of the movie, and use that time to work on my poetry.
We have lunch, and D is decidedly grumpy, so I put her down for nap and start our “quiet rest time” — this is usually for about an hour. Since there was a lot of fighting over toys this morning, I suggested they play games with toys they don’t like to share and get some alone time. They decide instead to play a game together, which is fine! I run a load of laundry, catch up on dishes, and read my ebook.
So the rest of the day, we plan to finish the movie when D wakes up, take a walk with B when he gets home from work, it’s W’s turn to help me cook dinner, then we’d spend the evening playing and reading before bed.
Today was pretty typical day, as days go. On days with nice weather, we’d spend the whole day outside; when we aren’t in quarantine, we might go out somewhere or have friends over to play. But those are other days, and I’m sure as I write these monthly narratives, you’ll see the variety of what our homeschool day may look like.
